Profile image of Andrew Reed

I have been a technician for 29 years and have worked in teaching and research laboratories. I have gained valuable experience in the day to day routines of running laboratories, trailing and testing protocols for practicals in Biochemistry, Cell Pathology and Microbiology and Haematology.

I have gained valuable experience in research laboratories working with Research fellows, PhD students, and academics. This has given me the skills and a variety of techniques to help in passing on knowledge to undergraduate students and colleagues.

I have experience in Cell culture, electrophoresis, Pcr and Immunohistochemistry. I adhere to H&S and COSHH within a category II laboratory.

Qualifications:

  • BTEC Certificate in Science
  • City and Guilds in Health and safety at work
  • IOSH management in Health and safety
  • Trained phlebotomist
  • Radiation Protection Officer.

Teaching

I prepare and deliver undergraduate practical classes for the Biosciences Course for years one, two and three in Biochemistry, Haematology, Cell Path and micro with guidance from the academic in charge of the practical and other technical professionals.

I make sure that we have the correct reagents and equipment available for this and to procure what is needed for the practicals when it is needed. I work safely to the university's guidelines, including risk assessments and COSHH requirements.

I carry out maintenance on equipment and diagnose problems when they arise. I give advice and knowledge to my peers and final year students during their dissertations.

Research

I have assisted with a number of research projects over the years and have been credited on scientific posters, including trials on Neutrophil activation using cytokine assay kits. I have also assisted in carrying out a study into dermal papilla cells with the effect of testosterone and phenol red media.

I was given the opportunity to deliver preliminary tests and working protocols on the production of oestrogens in map kinase, for a future PhD project.
