Course overview
On this MBA course you will explore issues that have significant impact within commercial organisations. Your learning will be centred around the key skills, processes and practices of organisational business management, and you will learn through working with others, building on personal experiences, and comparing and contrasting those with others on the course. Together we will propose solutions to real business problems, discussing and critically appraising them with the support of tutors and fellow learners.

Our course brings together academic theory and research, to support your personal and professional development. This will enable you to share knowledge, relate relevant research, and learn through practical application. MBA with Professional Experience
Students on the MBA with Professional Experience are expected to engage in experiential activity lasting the equivalent of an academic year. There are currently 2 options available:
Work placement
By undertaking a work placement you will be able to practically apply skills and knowledge developed in the taught modules. We will offer guidance and support and make recommendations with many of our partner organisations.
Enterprise Academy (London only)
The Enterprise Academy uses the university’s expertise to help the development of entrepreneurial skills and knowledge. The objective of this project is to develop a new commercial opportunity.
Course structure
How you will study
If you choose to study full time, the course will take 1 year to complete, or 2 years if you choose a year in industry. You will study:
- 4 compulsory modules
- A Capstone Project or Business Consultancy Project (for the Professional Experience route)

If you choose to study with Professional Experience, the course will take 2 years to complete. If you choose to study part time, the course will take 2 years to complete and the modules will be split across both years.

Compulsory module
Leadership, strategy and change are significant issues for organisations worldwide. In a rapidly evolving, uncertain, and complex global landscape, they need to consistently adapt to survive and succeed. Strategic leadership is crucial in steering this adaptation by harmonising vision, strategy, and culture to foster sustainable change. In organisations of all kinds, managers need to be able to lead and manage change. We will discuss these concept in the context of issues linked to additional responsibilities that leaders may face concerning sustainability, ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

Compulsory module
On this module we will introduce you to key international business theories and concepts. You will learn about the principal institutional and organisational macrostructures of the global economy, the role of the state, international organisations and regional trading blocs in shaping international business and consider the impact of diverse national business systems on firm strategy. You will also critically examine the process for making strategic choices, and explore and analyse different approaches and techniques used in strategic business and service planning.

Compulsory module
This module focuses on resource management and its effective deployment and allocation. We will introduce you to theoretical concepts such as:
- Human capital development
- Change management
- Motivational theories
- Learning organisations
- Financial methods
- Short-term and long-term decision-making
- Budgeting
You will develop financial accounting skills including interpreting management information, such as management accounts, ratio analysis and exploring differences in reporting practices. You will also develop an understanding of strategic workforce planning, including talent management and workforce design, so that you can develop frameworks for leading a team.

Compulsory module
Organisations of all sizes can leverage digital and social media channels for marketing opportunities, but they need people with the necessary expertise to use them effectively, especially in the digital age. This module focuses on the theoretical and practical application of digital marketing tools. Through it you will learn to evaluate and harness the power of various digital and social media platforms for successful marketing worldwide, as well as developing your appreciation of the importance of engagement in digital environments. This will also involve discussion of issues relating to social justice, inclusivity and sustainability, which link with York Business School’s commitment to the Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME).

Compulsory module
During the Capstone Project you will develop your studies in an area of your choice, through negotiating and developing an in-depth research topic with an allocated supervisor. The aim of this module is to encourage you to select a route where you can demonstrate the understanding and knowledge gained from the course and how this can be applied in a practical or theoretical way in a particular setting or context. This will be in the form of individual study and tutor led lectures and workshops. You will select one of the following routes:
- Dissertation
- Structured literature review
- Business Consultancy Project

Compulsory on Placement route
If you choose to study the MBA with Professional Experience route, you will complete Business Consultancy Project module. You will work independently to produce a consultancy project with the support of an appropriate academic supervisor during your placement year. This vocational opportunity is aimed at enhancing your future employability. You will engage with issues such as career decision making, the recruitment cycle, applying for jobs and sourcing and embarking on a placement or a group or individual project.

All modules are delivered through a range of teaching, learning and assessment strategies including:

Each module has a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) where you and other postgraduate students will be encouraged to participate in online debate and collaborative approaches to learning.
Many of our students on this course come to us having been out of formal education for some time, and there is plenty of support with study skills, academic analysis and writing.

Each module tutor will provide opportunities for formative assessment feedback to inform your work prior to submission. Advice will be provided in relation to development, further areas for research, and guidance on how to enhance your subject knowledge.

Minimum entry requirements
2:2 honours degree in a related subject
Work experience Current or recent work experience (within the last 2 years)
If your degree is in an unrelated subject, but you can provide evidence of relevant professional experience, your application may still be considered.
International students
If you are an international student you will need to show that your qualifications match our entry requirements.

If English is not your first language you will need to show that you have English Language competence at IELTS level 6.0 (with no skill below 5.5) or equivalent.
Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)
If you do not have traditional qualifications, you might be able to provide evidence of professional experience in the subject as an alternative way to meet the entry requirements. This is called Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL). Appropriate references and records of employment would need to be presented to support your case for admission.

The tuition fee for this postgraduate course in the 2026 - 2027 academic year is:
- £11,000 for 1 year of full time study
- £12,700 for the 2 year course with a placement year
These costs apply to all UK, Jersey, Guernsey and Isle of Man students.
